Know your brickwork

A brick laid lengthways is called a ‘stretcher’; the bricks in this wall are laid in ‘Stretcher Bond’
A brick laid endways is called a ‘header’; alternate rows of stretchers and headers make ‘English Bond’
This is ‘Flemish Bond’ where stretchers and headers alternate in the same row

The lower part of this wall is in English Bond, the newer, upper section is in Stretcher Bond
This wall has been laid with headers only, to go round a curve
A moment of eccentricity; a wall laid with stretchers on end
